US-98 is the only through road and it gridlocks every summer afternoon; the Mid-Bay Bridge is a faster toll alternative to reach Niceville. Most of the beachfront is condominium property with no public access, so aim for Henderson Beach State Park or James Lee Park rather than assuming a gap between towers. Crab Island is not an island. It is a submerged sandbar just north of the Destin Bridge, reachable only by boat, and on a holiday weekend it becomes a floating traffic jam. Royal red shrimp are the dish worth crossing town for: deepwater shrimp trawled off the continental shelf, sweet and closer to lobster than to Gulf whites, cooked briefly because they overcook in seconds.
