When the weather turns in Destin
Gulf storms are usually afternoon events that pass in an hour, so a full washout is rare. When it comes, Destin Commons has a cinema, the Air Force Armament Museum costs nothing, the Gulfarium keeps indoor tanks, and Silver Sands in Miramar Beach is one of the larger designer outlet centres in the country. Henderson Beach State Park protects the last undeveloped stretch of that quartz sand and is the reliable public access. The charter fleet along the harbour is the town's actual working attraction.
Destin after dark
HarborWalk Village is the concentrated evening, with waterfront bars, summer fireworks and boat crews coming off charters, while AJ's and the Boathouse Oyster Bar sit on the same stretch of Destin Harbor. This is a family and fishing town rather than a spring-break one, so the crowd skews older and earlier than Panama City Beach an hour east. Sandestin's Baytowne Wharf is the quieter alternative.
