What first-timers get wrong in Sydney
Tap a contactless bank card straight onto the reader; there is no need to buy an Opal at all. Daily spend caps at $19.30 Monday to Thursday and just $9.65 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, so shift your big travel day accordingly. The two airport rail stations are privately owned and add a station access fee, which is why locals take the 400 bus. Tipping is not expected.
Sydney after dark
The lockout laws imposed in 2014 hollowed out Kings Cross, and although they were scrapped in 2020 the Cross never came back; the crowd moved to Newtown, Enmore Road and the small bars tucked into Surry Hills and Darlinghurst laneways. Most pubs stop serving around midnight midweek. On Friday and Saturday nights the trains run all night, which is the argument for staying out past the last bus.
What things cost in Sydney
Caps aside, Sydney is dear. A flat white is $5 to $6.50, a schooner of beer $10 to $14 in a city pub, and a pub main $26 to $36. Taronga Zoo runs around $50 an adult and an Opera House tour about $45, while BridgeClimb starts near $200 and climbs past $400 at dusk. General entry at the three main museums costs nothing, which offsets a lot.
Sydney with kids, realistically
Take the ferry to Taronga and ride the Sky Safari cable car up, so the transport becomes half the day. For swimming, Balmoral and Manly's harbour side are netted and calm where Bondi has rips that catch grown adults. The ocean pools at Bronte, Wylie's and North Sydney are the local answer for toddlers. Australian summer UV routinely hits eleven, so rash vests are standard rather than fussy.
When the weather turns in Sydney
Sydney rain arrives as an east coast low rather than drizzle, dumping in hours and then clearing. Because the three big museums are free, a wet day costs nothing: the Australian Museum, the MCA and the Art Gallery's Tank. The Queen Victoria Building's arcades let you cross several blocks under glass, and the Mitchell Reading Room in the State Library on Macquarie Street is a fine place to sit out a storm.
