What first-timers get wrong in Gold Coast
This is a fifty-kilometre strip rather than a town, so choosing a base matters more than anything else: Surfers for nightlife, Burleigh for food, Broadbeach for the tram and the casino. Buy theme-park tickets online, never at the gate. The airport at Coolangatta straddles the Queensland and New South Wales border, and Queensland skips daylight saving, so summer arrivals confuse everyone. Swimming outside the flags is how visitors drown here.
What's actually worth your time in Gold Coast
The theme parks are why people come and they are not cheap: Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld and Wet'n'Wild each pass a hundred dollars at the gate, and multi-park passes only repay you past two visits. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the better animal option. The free Burleigh Heads headland track through pandanus to Tallebudgera is the best hour on the coast. Surfers Paradise itself is a photo stop.
Gold Coast's museums, and which one to pick
Treating this as a museum city wastes a day. HOTA Gallery at Evandale is the genuine exception: a folded, candy-coloured concrete tower opened in 2021, the largest public gallery outside an Australian capital, free for the permanent collection and ticketed for touring shows. Beyond it sits the volunteer-run Gold Coast and Hinterland Historical Museum in Southport, and then Brisbane, an hour north up the M1.
Gold Coast with kids, realistically
The parks split by age: Sea World suits under-sevens, Movie World's coasters demand height and nerve, and Dreamworld sits between them. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary runs a free-flight bird show and a wildlife hospital you watch through glass. The G:link tram runs the coast from Helensvale to Broadbeach and takes prams without booking. Swim between the flags at Burleigh or Kurrawa — the rips here are real.
When the weather turns in Gold Coast
Rain on the Gold Coast is subtropical and heavy, often lasting a whole day through the December-to-March wet. Pacific Fair at Broadbeach and Robina Town Centre are the indoor default and genuinely large. HOTA Gallery gives two decent hours. Dreamworld and Movie World stay open in rain with much shorter queues, which is the local hack. Springbrook's Natural Bridge waterfall is at its best in a downpour.
