South Bank's Streets Beach is a free chlorinated lagoon with real sand in the middle of the city, and it is genuinely good. Lone Pine, which opened in 1927 as the first koala sanctuary anywhere, still lets visitors hold one — something most Australian states prohibit. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is expensive for a view the Kangaroo Point cliffs below hand you free. Mount Coot-tha's lookout is a photo stop.
Brisbane after dark
Fortitude Valley was Australia's first declared Special Entertainment Precinct, a zoning trick that stops noise complaints from closing live-music rooms, which is why Brunswick Street Mall still runs loud past two. Howard Smith Wharves, tucked beneath the Story Bridge cliffs, is the polished riverside alternative and shuts earlier. Caxton Street fills hours before any Suncorp Stadium fixture. The South Bank Cultural Centre puts QAGOMA, the Queensland Museum, the State Library and the Performing Arts Centre under one covered walkway, all free except SparkLab. The Grand Arbour's bougainvillea-clad walkway keeps you dry the length of the parklands. Queen Street Mall connects indoors.
