South Bank's Streets Beach is a free chlorinated lagoon with real sand in the middle of the city, and it is genuinely good. Lone Pine, which opened in 1927 as the first koala sanctuary anywhere, still lets visitors hold one — something most Australian states prohibit. The Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA face each other across a South Bank lawn and both charge nothing for their collections; GOMA's Asia Pacific Triennial is worth timing a trip around. The Queensland Museum next door is also free and displays the Avro Avian in which Bert Hinkler flew solo from England in 1928, alongside a Muttaburrasaurus. The State Library between them runs free exhibitions and reliable air conditioning.
