Brisbane's museums, and which one to pick
The Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA face each other across a South Bank lawn and both charge nothing for their collections; GOMA's Asia Pacific Triennial is worth timing a trip around. The Queensland Museum next door is also free and displays the Avro Avian in which Bert Hinkler flew solo from England in 1928, alongside a Muttaburrasaurus. The State Library between them runs free exhibitions and reliable air conditioning.
What's actually worth your time in Brisbane
South Bank's Streets Beach is a free chlorinated lagoon with real sand in the middle of the city, and it is genuinely good. Lone Pine, which opened in 1927 as the first koala sanctuary anywhere, still lets visitors hold one — something most Australian states prohibit. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is expensive for a view the Kangaroo Point cliffs below hand you free. Mount Coot-tha's lookout is a photo stop.

Brisbane storms are a summer afternoon event rather than a lost day, arriving around four and finishing inside an hour. The South Bank Cultural Centre puts QAGOMA, the Queensland Museum, the State Library and the Performing Arts Centre under one covered walkway, all free except SparkLab. The Grand Arbour's bougainvillea-clad walkway keeps you dry the length of the parklands. Queen Street Mall connects indoors.
What first-timers get wrong in Brisbane
Fifty cents flat is not a deal you need to hunt for: every bus, train, tram and City ferry in South East Queensland costs that per trip on a go card, contactless card or paper ticket, with the Airtrain to the airport the one loud exception at full fare. December-to-February humidity is the real cost of a midday plan. In the CBD, streets named for women run one way and those named for men the other.
What things cost in Brisbane
Every public transport trip is 50 cents, so a day of ferries and trains costs a couple of dollars. A South Bank cafe breakfast runs AUD 18 to 26 and a schooner in the Valley AUD 9 to 13. QAGOMA, the Queensland Museum and the State Library charge nothing at all. Lone Pine is the big-ticket item at around AUD 55, and the Story Bridge climb costs considerably more.
